As an airline pilot, I’ve spent more than two decades sitting at the pointy end of some of the most remarkable machines ever built. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate enough to fly the Jetstream 41, CRJ-200, DC-10, 717, 737, 747, 757, 767, 787, and the Airbus A319, A320, and A321.

Looking back, I realize that I’ve had a front-row seat to several generations of aviation history.

And yet, despite thousands of hours in the air, I still find myself staring out the window and thinking:

“How does this thing actually work?”

The Most Beautiful Wing I’ve Ever Seen

Of all the airplanes I’ve flown, the Boeing 787 has one of the most beautiful wings I’ve ever seen.

Pilots often talk about performance, fuel burn, handling characteristics, or reliability. But every once in a while, an airplane comes along that is simply beautiful.

The 787 wing is one of those.

The graceful sweep, the elegant curve, the way the wing narrows toward the tip, and the distinctive raked wingtip all combine to create something that looks less like a machine and more like a living thing.

What fascinated me most wasn’t just the shape—it was the movement.

On a turbulent day, you could watch those wings flex dramatically. To a nervous passenger, it might look alarming. To me, it was mesmerizing.

The wing wasn’t fighting the turbulence.

It was dancing with it.

The engineers who designed that wing understood something fundamental:

The strongest structures aren’t always the stiffest.

Sometimes they’re the ones that know how to bend.

Why Flexibility Is Strength

Passengers often become nervous when they see an airliner’s wings moving in turbulence.

I’ve heard comments like:

“Are they supposed to do that?”

The answer is always yes.

Not only are they supposed to do that, they’re designed specifically to do that.

A wing that couldn’t flex would transfer enormous loads directly into the structure. Instead, the wing bends and absorbs energy, reducing stress and improving both comfort and durability.

Rigid things crack.

Flexible things survive.

The same principle exists throughout engineering.

Bridges sway.

Skyscrapers move.

Ships roll.

Car suspensions compress.

Trees bend in the wind.

Nature and engineering both teach the same lesson:

Controlled movement is often a sign of strength, not weakness.

One of the most famous examples is the Boeing 787 certification test. During testing, engineers loaded the wing to extreme levels, eventually bending it upward by approximately 25 feet before failure.

Twenty-five feet.

Most people looking at the photos think something has gone terribly wrong.

Engineers look at the same image and think:

“Perfect.”

A Lesson from the DC-10

Long before I flew the 787, I spent time flying the DC-10-30.

If the 787 represents the future, the DC-10 represented an era when airplanes seemed larger than life.

It was powerful, distinctive, and full of personality.

One of my favorite obscure DC-10 facts involved pushback.

Under certain conditions, we were required to have at least 80,000 pounds of fuel in the center tank before a tow bar could be connected and the airplane pushed back from the gate.

Think about that for a moment.

Eighty thousand pounds of fuel.

Just to move the airplane backward.

To the average person, that sounds ridiculous.

To an engineer, it makes perfect sense.

Weight distribution and center of gravity matter enormously, even when an airplane is sitting still.

That requirement wasn’t about fuel for the flight.

It was about balance.

It’s a reminder that airplanes are constantly managing forces that most people never think about.

Every load.

Every passenger.

Every bag.

Every pound of fuel.

Everything affects the way the airplane behaves.

The Airplanes That Shaped My Career

I’ve been fortunate to fly a wide variety of aircraft, and each taught me something different.

The Jetstream 41 taught me about hands-on flying.

The CRJ-200 taught me regional airline life.

The DC-10 introduced me to classic heavy-metal aviation.

The 717 carried forward the legacy of the DC-9 family.

The 737 demonstrated simplicity and versatility.

The 747 was the Queen.

The 757 felt like a sports car disguised as an airliner.

The 767 was a workhorse.

The Airbus family introduced a different philosophy of automation and flight control.

And the 787 represented a leap into the future.

Each airplane had strengths.

Each had quirks.

Each had a personality.

Pilots often get asked which airplane was their favorite.

The truth is that favorites change depending on the question.

Most capable?

Most comfortable?

Most beautiful?

Most fun?

Most memorable?

They’re not always the same answer.

Cruise Ships and Floating Cities

My fascination with engineering extends beyond airplanes.

I’ve always been a bit of a ship geek too.

One thing that has always amazed me is how a modern cruise ship can remain upright when it appears that 80 or 90 percent of the vessel is above the waterline.

When you stand on a pier and look at one of today’s massive cruise ships, your brain tells you that it shouldn’t work.

The ship looks top-heavy.

Impossible, even.

Yet beneath the waterline is a carefully engineered system of ballast, machinery, fuel, structure, and buoyancy.

The center of gravity remains much lower than most people imagine.

The ship is designed not only to stay upright, but to do so comfortably.

In fact, cruise ships can actually become too stable.

A vessel that rights itself too aggressively can create harsh, uncomfortable motions for passengers.

Once again, engineers seek balance.

Not maximum rigidity.

Not maximum stability.

The right amount.

The Same Lesson Everywhere

The more I learn about engineering, the more I notice the same principles appearing over and over again.

Aircraft wings flex.

Ships roll.

Bridges sway.

Skyscrapers move.

Everything is designed to accommodate forces rather than simply resist them.

It’s a lesson that extends beyond engineering.

Sometimes strength isn’t about refusing to move.

Sometimes strength is about knowing how to move without breaking.

Looking Back

As I reflect on my career, I realize how fortunate I’ve been.

Few pilots have the opportunity to fly such a wide range of aircraft.

Fewer still get to witness the transition from classic analog cockpits to fly-by-wire systems, from aluminum structures to advanced composites, and from the era of the DC-10 to the era of the 787.

But what I appreciate most isn’t the logbook entries.

It’s the wonder.

The feeling of walking through an airport and still looking up at an airplane overhead.

The feeling of watching a 787 wing flex against a blue sky.

The feeling of standing next to a cruise ship and wondering how it can possibly float.

The feeling of learning something new after all these years.

Because no matter how much experience we gain, the world is still full of remarkable things.

And sometimes the best conversations are simply about why they work.

Especially when they’re shared with someone who understands the wonder.

Cruising as a Kid

I was fortunate to start cruising at a young age with my family.

Those early trips opened my eyes to the idea that the world was much bigger than the place I grew up. There was something magical about waking up in a new destination every morning while the ship quietly carried us there overnight.

One day you might be exploring a Caribbean island.

The next morning you’re somewhere completely new.

For a kid, that kind of travel feels almost like magic.

Cruising as a Solo Traveler

In my early adult years, cruising took on a different meaning.

I sailed solo on several cruises and discovered that cruises aren’t just for families or retirees — they can be an incredible experience for independent travelers as well.

You can explore new destinations, meet people from all over the world, or simply relax and recharge.

Cruises have a unique way of offering both adventure and simplicity at the same time.

Everything you need is right there — food, entertainment, transportation, and your room — while the world unfolds around you.

Cruising as a Dad

Today, cruising has taken on yet another meaning.

Now I get to experience it through the eyes of my daughter.

Watching her excitement as we board a ship reminds me exactly how I felt when I was her age. Seeing her discover new places, try new foods, and experience the energy of life onboard has been incredibly rewarding.

Cruising has a way of bringing generations together in a way that few vacations can.

You can have grandparents, parents, and kids all enjoying the same trip — but in their own ways.

And at the end of the day, everyone meets back up for dinner and stories from the day.

A Life Spent in Travel

Cruising isn’t the only way travel has shaped my life.

For the past 25 years, I’ve worked as a commercial airline pilot, which has allowed me to see the world from a completely different perspective.

Aviation has given me a deep understanding of travel logistics, destinations, and the behind-the-scenes pieces that make a trip run smoothly.

But even after thousands of hours in the air, cruising has remained one of my favorite ways to travel.

There’s something special about unpacking once, settling in, and letting the journey come to you.

Turning a Passion Into a Second Career

Over time, my love for cruising naturally led to something else.

As both a travel advisor and a dad traveling with my daughter, I’m always looking at trips from two perspectives: Is this worth recommending to clients? and Would my family want to do this again?

The short answer: absolutely.

One of the things Disney does incredibly well is making the ship feel magical for kids while still being relaxing for adults. My daughter spent hours in the Oceaneer Club, which is essentially a huge immersive play space staffed by counselors. For parents, that means you can enjoy some downtime knowing your kids are having an incredible experience.

Another highlight was Pirate Night. The entire ship transforms for the evening, ending with fireworks at sea. We found one of the best viewing spots on Deck 10, starboard side, which gave us a great angle of both the stage show and the fireworks overhead. One piece of advice, the good spots along the rail fill up early on Pirate Night. Spots along the railing start filling up about an hour prior to the start of the show. The show begins a little after 10pm.

Dining is another area where Disney shines. Instead of eating in the same restaurant every night, guests rotate through themed restaurants while the same serving team follows you throughout the cruise. It’s a small touch, but it creates a much more personal experience.  Also, all you wait staff follow you from venue to venue. That way, they get to know your family and their preferences. They will always try to get the kids food out first, as they know the little ones will start to get restless if they have to wait too long for their food.

For families considering their first cruise, Disney is a fantastic entry point. Everything from the activities to the service is designed to remove stress and maximize fun. A 5-night voyage is also a great intro into cruising. It’s not too long and there’s still enough time to see and do everything.
